Kid-Friendly Activities in St. Augustine

We love our smallest passengers, and as parents ourselves, we know it’s always great to have activities that will keep kids entertained. Check out some of our favorites:

Hunt for Shark’s Teeth

St. Augustine has some of the best beaches around, and there’s nothing like a day in the sun to tucker out the kids. If you’re looking for something to do besides play in the waves, our beaches are fantastic for finding fossilized shark teeth. The best beaches for shark teeth are:

  • Vilano Beach
    • Mickler’s Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach
    • Anastasia State Park
    • Crescent Beach

Hot tips for happy hunting:

  • Go at low tide or when the tide is running out, a.k.a. going from high tide to low tide
    • Fossilized shark teeth are black, charcoal or deep maroon, and can appear glossy
    • Grab a sieve with wider holes – our beaches tend to be made up of larger coquina sand
    • Add to your collection with our new selection of megalodon teeth, available in The Salty Boutique

Let the kids climb to their hearts’ content. Stone Climbing has a dedicated grom wall on the second floor just for the kids. They recommend kids under seven stay in the dedicated kids area. The first floor has larger climbing and bouldering areas with paths for all levels, from beginner to expert. You don’t need to pack any gear, as they rent and sell climbing shoes (required), harnesses and chalk. For beginners who like some instruction, they also offer classes like Intro to Bouldering and Intro to Top Rope.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park | 999 Anastasia Boulevard, St. Augustine

Alligators, Komodo dragons and sloths – oh my! Kids will love this zoo, and parents will be equally enthralled by the St. Augustine Alligator Farm’s large collection of animals. Despite the name Alligator Farm, this AZA-accredited zoo focuses on education and conservation. Don’t miss the alligator feedings, the Scales and Tales show, where kids can safely get up close to snakes, turtles and lizards, Maximo and take a photo with a juvenile alligator. Birders can view hundreds of birds in The Rookery, where roseate spoonbills, herons, ibis, wood storks and more come to build their nests and roost.

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve | 503 Guana River Road, St. Augustine

Hike, bike and explore at the GTM Research Reserve, one of only 28 national estuarine research reserves in the nation. The Visitor Center and Museum is worth the drive alone, with super cool displays that show the ecology of the estuary, tanks of live fish, turtles, and snakes and fossils, models of large sea creatures and locally found archaeological items. The 76,000-acre reserve also has a network of trails for hiking and biking, plus water access for fishing. They host regular family seining opportunities, beach clean-ups, nature journaling classes and guided hikes.

St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum | 12 South Castillo Drive, St. Augustine

Young scallywags will love this interactive, pirate-themed museum. Entrepreneur Pat Croce’s passion project, the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum features over 800 authentic artifacts from the 1600s through the present day. The museum celebrates local pirate history, including Sir Francis Drake and Robert Searles, who frequented St. Augustine on their high-seas adventures. Stroll through a replica street in Port Royal, visit an authentic tavern and learn to tie knots and steer a boat at this museum that encourages kids to touch and experience.
