Ways to Get Around St. Augustine

From trolleys and trains to bikes and recreational vehicles, here’s how to take in the town

St. Augustine has been welcoming visitors to its historic city for hundreds of years – and it’s no surprise as to why. With ancient city walls and fortresses, charming brick streets, stunning sandy beaches and a stellar food scene, St. Augustine charms everyone who comes to stay. If you’re visiting and without a car, or wanting to skip finding parking spots throughout town, there are plenty of options to keep you moving while having fun in the Oldest City.

Upon arriving downtown, you’ll notice trolleys and red trains gliding through the historic streets. With two companies to choose from, you have options in how to utilize these fun methods of transport. Old Town Trolley offers 90-minute tours of town and an unlimited hop-on & hop-off option, which you can use as often as you like, all day long. Sightsee for a bit, and then hop off at any stop, exploring an attraction or neighborhood, and hop back on when you are ready. There are over 20 stops throughout downtown, including the Historic District, St. George Street, Lincolnville and Plaza de la Constitución. Old Town also offers a shuttle to St. Augustine Beach. Tours start around 9AM and end around 6PM, and tickets begin at $35.14. Ripley’s Red Train Tours offer a roundtrip, 60-minute narrated tour that highlights more than 100 historical sites and points of interest. Take in the city’s history, and end up right where you started, at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! You can purchase just a train tour and/or tickets to the museum as well, where you can explore the most unusual artifacts, art and oddities. Tours run from 10AM to 5PM, and tickets start at $23.99.

Another fun and super unique method of transport is an open-air utility vehicle, like a Moke, Arcimoto or Slingshot from Seaside Adventures. Mokes are like a mix between a golf cart and a retro, tiny Jeep. They’re electric, car-seat and pet friendly, and dare we say very cute. Rent by the hour, for a half or full day, or keep one overnight. Arcimoto’s FUV, short for “Fun Utility Vehicle,” is a mix of a motorcycle and compact car, with three wheels to make it easy to navigate small streets and an urban setting. They’re super environmentally friendly and create quite the zippy experience. They can be rented for 1-2 hours. Polaris Slingshots offer a more adrenaline (and gas) fueled adventure, looking like small, open-aired sports cars. They come in automatic or manual, and can be rented hourly or for a full 24 hours. All vehicles are street legal, so you can take them from downtown to the beaches, or up the coastal highway.

Our favorite way to explore town (and the more local way) is to ride a bike! St. Augustine is bike friendly, particularly on Anastasia Island, and DRIFTERS offers stylish and comfy rides. With free delivery and pick up, DRIFTERS bicycles are ready for you to explore all of St. Augustine. They offer classic cruisers, 3-speeds and electric bikes for adults, as well as kids bikes, trailers and seats. Rent for the day or for up to a week or more, and lights and locks are included (helmets are available upon request). And lastly, you can always walk! Parts of St. Augustine are very walkable, especially historic downtown. Stay in a local B&B or hotel, and you’ll be able to get around easily on foot. There are many shops, historic destinations, bars and restaurants along the way, so you can amble leisurely. You can walk west to Riberia, north to upper San Marco, south to the Armory and even across the Bridge of Lions to Anastasia Blvd for a more locals’ scene.
